Keyboard Shortcuts for Desktop Effects in Ubuntu 8.10

Dear Reader,

Through a process of trial and error (as there doesn’t appear to be any documentation that I can find) I have discovered the following cool shortcuts.  These are with an integrated intel wireless chip and System -> Preferences -> Appearance set to “Extra”.

  • CTRL+ALT + Left or Right Arrow Keys: switch virtual desktops
  • Windows Key + E: zoom out to see all virtual desktops at once
  • Windows Key + Tab: switch between windows in an attractive manner
  • Windows Key + N: Change the current window to reverse colours
  • Windows Key + M: Change the whole screen to reverse colours
  • Shift + Alt + Up Arrow: Activate a window picker

If you know of any others then please let me know…

Edit: After a bit of digging it appears what you need is the CompizConfig Settings Manager. If you install this through Synaptic (or wherever) then you can customise the appearance of your desktop as you wish.
